On the way back home from my dentist feeling upset about the treatment and feeling sorry for myself, I came across a young homeless person sitting on the ground, asking for help. I stopped and offered him the apple I had. He looked at me and opened his mouth showing me the one tooth he had in his mouth. He had one tooth! In the front. He didn’t have to explain to me that he cannot eat apples.

At that moment the lesson was clear. Perspective. Gratitude. I thanked him, handed him some money instead, and walked away.

How do we hold on to gratitude, even in our own struggles?
