Wedding Guest Outfit FAQs: Deciding What to Wear as a Middle-Aged Woman

Navigating the wardrobe waters as a middle-aged wedding guest can often feel like threading a needle—balancing style, sophistication, and appropriateness while adhering to the unspoken rules of wedding attire. Here we will address your burning questions and dispel any sartorial uncertainties to ensure you’re dressed to impress at every celebration.

What are some fashion dos for wedding guests?

Hemlines and Necklines

Opt for dresses with hemlines that fall below the knee for a sophisticated and age-appropriate look. Necklines such as scoop necks, V-necks, or boat necks are flattering choices that strike the perfect balance between elegance and allure.

Choose Timeless Silhouettes

Embrace classic silhouettes that flatter your figure and stand the test of time. A-line dresses, sheath dresses, or tailored pantsuits are versatile options that exude sophistication and style.

Can I wear white to a wedding?

While there may be some exceptions to this rule, it’s generally considered poor etiquette to wear white to a wedding as a guest. White is traditionally reserved for the bride, and wearing it can be seen as a breach of etiquette or an attempt to upstage the bride on her special day. Instead, opt for colorful or printed dresses that celebrate the joyous occasion without overshadowing the main attraction.

How to Find a Dress for My Body Shape

Finding the perfect dress for your body shape is essential for looking and feeling your best as a wedding guest. Here are some tips to help you find a dress that flatters your figure:

Identify Your Body Shape

According to Catherine Schuller, AICI Certified Image Professional and Stylist for Alembika, finding the right style or size is less about height and weight and more about SHAPE

Her Figure&Fit wheel is a simple tool that allows for an assessment without tape measures or calipers.  The wheel divides the body into comparisons – bust to waist, waist to hips and bust to hips.

Highlight Your Assets

Choose dresses that highlight your favorite features while minimizing any areas you’re less confident about. For example, if you have a narrow waist, opt for dresses with a defined waistline to accentuate your curves.

Choose the Right Silhouette

Select silhouettes that complement your body shape. A-line dresses are universally flattering, while empire waist dresses are ideal for camouflaging a larger midsection.

Consider Fabric and Texture

Choose fabrics and textures that skim over your curves rather than clinging to them. Look for structured fabrics like cotton, silk, or chiffon that provide shape and definition without adding bulk.

i love this identifying body type, but a lot also depends on tall, mid or short height. Being a youthful (!) 80 i am shorter than i was as well as maybe being a pear shape, and petite. I will be going to a Chabad wedding outside in early June in DC and will wear the beautiful black dress with the white flower in the skirt. I will try to get someone to take a picture to send to you all. I think I will feel lovely even without heels that I can no longer wear.
