Some people grow up knowing exactly what they want to do. Kathy King was lucky enough to be one of them.
Back in high school, I knew I wanted to be a fashion buyer. When I got into college, I was able to direct my education toward business and textiles and clothing. With a solid foundation, I launched my career and worked for different department stores all over the country.
Kathy King, owner of Barbara & Co located in Denver, Colorado and Boulder, Colorado
She was also able to develop a network within the industry – including Barbara Heimlich, founder of fashion boutique Barbara & Company. When Barbara & Company first opened in 1983, there was only one location in Denver. Kathy returned to Denver to work for her friend, but Barbara ended up giving her an ultimatum – either buy the store, or she would close it. In 1999, Kathy made the decision to take over the Barbara & Company business. Read the rest of her story via boulderdowntown.com.
Did you always want to be a retailer?
Actually, I always wanted to be a buyer. My mother was an accomplished seamstress and taught me about patterns, fabric selection and construction. Together we would design my wardrobe. From high school on I wanted to be department store fashion buyer. I ended up buying sportswear and accessories for 5 different companies as my husband was transferred around the country. My career as a retail store owner happened quite by accident when I was offered an opportunity to buy Barbara & Company.
What would you do in your next life?
In my next life I plan to volunteer for the charities I support now, spend more time with my grandchildren and travel.

The Iconic jean is my very favorite, most versatile, Alembika style. I own eight different pairs in basic and novelty fabrics. I also like the knits in the Urban line and the soft pant styles that complement many tops and sweaters in the store.
