As we age, family dynamics change. Kids grow up, people get married, and parents require caretaking. We accommodate these changes every day because we adapt for our loved ones. But sometimes these transitions feel heavier and harder to adjust to when it comes to family holidays and traditions.
My friend’s family decided to celebrate Thanksgiving at Grandma’s house in NYC instead of the parents’ house in VA where they were used to celebrating every year.
Even though it felt right to do, it came with a feeling of sadness and loss—losing time cooking together and doing a 2000-piece puzzle that took all weekend. It will be different this year.
Our families’ structure and dynamic change when there is an aging parent we care for.
It is good to notice and be present to these changes and the feelings they bring with them. There is grief next to the celebration and It’s Ok.
How will you celebrate this year?
