There is a great Buddhist practice that I like to go back to, especially around Thanksgiving, which aligns with the season’s spirit of gratitude and generosity.

Everyday, for the next week, I will give $1.00 to 3 people on the way to work. If I am present, the $3.00 will be gone between my house and the subway station. If I lost track, and did not see the people I passed by on the way to the train, I would have plenty of chances to catch up when I arrive in midtown where our office is. The only obstacle with this exercise is to have $3.00 in cash in my pocket.

The practice of giving is a great healer and a heart opener, and there are so many ways we can give, not only through money. When I give my full attention to someone, or when I give my time to a friend who is in need, it  works like magic. It shifts the focus from the “me” to the “we,” offering profound relief and connection.

As we gather this holiday, may we all find ways to give, whether through small acts or grand gestures and celebrate the beauty of community and gratitude.

Happy Thanksgiving!
