I have a few friends with health journeys who have to make medical decisions. People approach this in many ways, and we each respond differently during a health crisis. Some of us want to know more and ask questions; others prefer to stick to one path and ask less.

I learned one important thing from accompanying them: never go to an important doctor appointment alone. It is crucial to have another set of ears with you.

As patients we are more anxious and cannot fully grasp everything the doctor says. Even if the news is not bad. We anticipate. I see it in every appointment. What she or he heard was not what I heard.

It’s natural and OK.

Say yes when a friend asks if they can accompany you to your appointment. People don’t know how to help and need the patient’s guidance.

How do you respond when there is a health crisis?
