Daring comes in all shapes and sizes and Dr. Nella Shapiro’s brand of bravery is breaking the glass ceiling in the medical profession.

Nella is a graduate of Barnard College and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. After graduating medical school in 1972, she went on to become a general and trauma surgeon, as well as a breast cancer oncologist.

At the time, this was a male-dominated field. But Nella’s fearlessness, bravery and determination helped her push past this barrier. She is now the proud mother of two children and grandmother of two more. We asked Nella our 5 #AlembikaWomen questions and here is what she shared…

What did you do or do for work?

I am a surgeon and a breast cancer oncologist of 51 years.

What do you do when you don’t know what to do?

I try to enumerate all of the possibilities before me and choose what seems the most positive for me and whoever else is involved.

What would you do if you had the whole day for yourself?
This is really a luxury. I try to clear my mind, relax, connect with my friends and listen to music.

What is the best thing about being a woman?
Being a grandmother, mother, and being able to connect with other women.

What is the one piece of clothing you cannot live without?
I have a hard time with this question as mood, the season, and the weather effect one’s choice of clothing. I would choose the Punto Pants as the look can be dressed up and down. Those pants make me feel like a woman from a different era… even a bit swashbuckling.

Editor’s note: Swashbuckling? How much do WE LOVE THAT?! It’s true. Punto Pants are wonderful and feel empowering.

The beautiful Arabesque Dress you see Nella wearing in her office is from Alembika’s Fall-Winter 2022 collections and was a popular style that sold out.
