What moment in your life made you think, “After that, life was never the same.”
On December 26, 2004 I boarded a houseboat on the backwaters of Kerala, India, minutes before the Indian Ocean tsunami rushed through the ashram I was visiting with thousands of others to receive “darshan”—a hug and blessing from Mata Amritanandamayi, known throughout the world as Amma, or Mother, for her selfless love and compassion. Very long story short, and despite the devastation all around us, we were fine. “That moment” didn’t arise until I got home, when I felt the full impact of just how lucky I was to have not been among the more than 230,000 lives that perished that day. Now I keep a gratitude journal.

What do you do when you don’t know what to do?
I talk. I run ideas by the smart, savvy people in my life who I trust and admire. I make lists and weigh the pros and cons. I let it all marinate. I meditate. I sleep on it. Then, I go with my gut.

What would you do if you had the whole day to yourself?
Oh, the luxury! It probably depends on the weather. As a city dweller, I crave nature… I’d pack a picnic, grab a friend or three, and go hiking… or I’d stay in my comfies, play on my yoga mat, throw together a pot of healing soup, and curl up with my fur babies for a binge-watching marathon.

What is the best thing about being a woman?
Our intuition and the relationships it leads to—between friends, co-workers, mother and daughter, etc. Women have an amazing capacity to not only love and care for others, but to develop solid, lasting, honest and emotionally fulfilling relationships with each other. That’s what I love best.

What’s the one piece of clothing you can’t live without?
A tank top. It’s the ultimate layering foundation year-round!
