We love getting to know our customers! Marlene happens to be one of those women, and a devoted, enthusiastic regular in our Zoom Café gatherings. It’s great to hear about what inspires and empowers us all, and Marlene always has valuable wisdom to share.

What moment in your life made you think, “After that, life was never the same.”

I’ve had an adventurous life so far. I have been with my husband for 51 years and can’t wait for more! My “never the same” moment came early in my career… Being the people-person I am, I love to learn. I became an interior designer for kitchen and bathroom showrooms, first honing my skills in that world. (It was fun spending other people’s money.) But 17 years ago, I adapted those skills for outside landscaping design. How super-fun it was!! It was like creating a puzzle and filling in the colors. (Funny, I can remember a color my whole life, just not people’s names.)

What do you do when you don’t know what to do?

As a result of some health issues, I had to retire earlier than I’d have liked to. That has created lots of challenges. I have been extremely lucky to work with different women/friends who help me to get out and about. It’s been an amazing experience, for which I am grateful!

What would you do if you had the whole day to yourself?

I would love to spend the whole day with my three fabulous grandkids. They are my joy!!! We all bake, play games, watch movies and talk. They bring me the 411, “the know,” about what’s happening in their lives, as well as music, games and so many other wonderful things. I’ve learned so much from their knowledge of science, history and how to be “real” in a world that is constantly changing.

What is the best thing about being a woman?
I am so thankful for being a woman, especially having gone through the women’s new-found world in the 60’s! I have birthed the most amazing two kids, as well as being in the room, when all three of my grandkids were born (both my husband and feel eternally Blessed). I wouldn’t mind staying around for another 30 years, just to see how my two granddaughters and grandson choose to live their lives!

What’s the one piece of clothing you can’t live without?
My black leggings. They hold my tummy in and go with everything!!!
